Maxillofacial prostheses are necessary to restore teeth and jaw structures that are lost to either trauma (auto accidents, etc.) or surgery needed to remove certain types of oral cancer. These prostheses can be anchored to the natural teeth or to dental implants for stability. They are used to obturate (close or fill) any openings between the oral and nasal cavity. If such openings exist, a patient will have severe difficulties with speech, eating and swallowing.
